ON TOUR
Pihapiirissä piirtäen (2023)
Pihapiirissä piirtäen is a community art project that will bring participatory art events to the yards of elderly. In the autumn 2023 Zero Gravity Company will visit four senior houses with two art workshops and an outdoor version of contemporary circus performance Passing Thoughts. The aim of the project is to create possibilities for the elderly to experience art easily and near their homes. During the project we want to give an active role to the elderly and encourage them to express their own creativity.
Zero Gravity Company invites residents to drawing workshops to try out different art techniques. Inspiration for the works will be drawn from the surrounding nature. Our hope is to provide positive experiences with making art and to practice a more compassionate attitude toward one’s own drawing and painting.
After the workshops a 30 minute contemporary circus performance Passing Thoughts takes place at the yards. Whilst tightwire artist Netta Reunanen performs a tightwire meditation walk and Reija Tapaninen draws quick, sketch-like croquis pieces. As the performance progresses the interaction between the performers deepens and opens up into a space of living in the moment. The audience is encouraged to participate in the performance. They are invited to document what they see and what they think during the performance by drawing.
Passing Thoughts had a premiere on 30.9.2022 in Jyväskylä Main library.

Passing thoughts (2022)
Passing thoughts dives into an entwined horizon of body and mind. This entity forms from visual art exhibition and contemporary circus performance. Whilst tightwire artist Netta Reunanen performs a tightwire meditation walk, Reija Tapaninen draws quick, sketch-like croquis pieces. As the contemporary circus performance progresses, the tightwire meditation opens up towards the art pieces and is impressed by them. The space is filled by paper that gets drawn to, pressed and sgrunched by imprints of the interaction between the performers and of their presence in the moment. As the performance progresses, with improvisation, the interaction between the performers deepens and opens up into a space of living in the moment. Reija Tapaninen's art pieces are used as the setting. The pieces are a debrief and an analysis in picture form of the bodily diaries of eight finnish circus artists. The audience is invited to stay after the performance to view the art pieces and to discuss with artists about their experience of the performance. The audience is encouraged to participate in the performance and to leave their mark on it. Before the performance there are supplies for drawing so the audience can document what they see and what they think during the performance. The drawings can be left as part of the setting/exhibition. Ruusut / Roses (2022 & 2023) Ruusut is a two-part performance project for the elderly. The aim of the project is to bring performances close to the participants and their everyday life. The first part, Kurtturuusut (Rosa Rugosas), is a participatory art event that visits the private yards of elderly in summer 2022. Rosa Rugosa is defined in Finland as an invasive alien species and therefore it must be removed. As a part of the performance we help the participant in this removal process. The performance provides a moment to say farewell to the Rosa Rugosa – a plant that has been a part of the Finnish landscape for a hundred years and has therefore become a recognizable part of the national landscape. What memories does Rosa Rugosa carry with it? During the performance we want to give time to the participants and share a moment together. Through discussions the lives and memories of the participants will become a part of the performance. The second part, Seinäruusut (Wallflowers), is a contemporary circus performance and flower workshop that tours public nursing homes in Helsinki in spring 2023. Seinäruusut celebrates the act of supporting and giving room for others. The performance combines circus, music, playful visuality and object manipulation. Seinäruusut brings color and magic in the middle of everyday life. If a wallflower would sing, what would it sing? After the performance a flower arrangement is made together with the residents. It is a moment to share time, memories and stories while making something together. The flower arrangement is left at the nursing home as a memory of the performance. The performance is designed to be accessible, and it can be experienced through multiple senses. Nuorameditaatio / Tigth wire meditation (2021)
I step on the wire. I breathe. I am. Tight Wire Meditation is a performance in a public space, in which contemporary circus artist Netta Reunanen practices walking meditation on a tight wire for 60 minutes. In walking meditation, one walks while listening to one’s bodily events, being aware but without criticizing. With Tight Wire Meditation, Reunanen seeks for connection to herself and her surrounding world. When I walk on the wire I´m fully present in the moment. At its best, it feels like time expands. When I´m walking, I am well aware of every cell and movement in my body. Thoughts don’t control me, I just am. The ability to be present in a moment is enhanced. Concept and performer Netta Reunanen Design Annika Saloranta - Costume Netta Reunanen and Annika Saloranta - Tight wire fan Duration 60 minutes Suitability All ages Premiere 6.8.2021 Old church park Jyväskylä, Finland. Lilies ( 2019)
Contemporary circus performance that was supposed to be composed for one but is now performed by four. Celebrating the inescapable act of mourning – facing the overwhelming, overtaking and paralyzing force of dreams and futures lost. This chain of acts on stage is created and performed to honor everybody whose dreams, love, identities and imagined universes were destroyed and who --- did not make it. This is to remember all those who disappeared. Were lost. Are forgotten. Lilies is composed of scenes on and under the tight wire, live music, words spoken and silenced, flowers blooming and dying. By way of better understanding we wish to open a window for hope. Work in progress
Working title on its way (working title) Maarit Utriainen creates a gentle space for suggestions of different ways of being. It's a gentle contemporary circus act, like an introvert's tree house. A place where, alongside the familiar aesthetics an alternative way of being is proposed. It's a feeling and a place that you could escape to as a child and to which you would sometimes need to go as an adult. The world of the show allows different kinds of experimentation, withdrawal, weirdness, ways of being, waiting, forgetting, not doing and monkeying around. Working title on its way (working title) is an up-coming solo performance that gives space for trying, finding and making up. Concept and performing Maarit Utriainen Premiere Spring 2023 Supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland |
Stage of Change

101 Images of a Body
Is a project that absorbes in the embodied experience of a circusartist. During this project my aim is to understand body and embodied experience as fracture of knowlidge that combines space and time both inside the body and around it birthing connections between one and other. 101 Images of a Body could be performing art that takes a pause makes one sink maybe it forgets the aim of satisfying audiences’ needs? It could be performing art that escapes traditional expectations of settling for its’ part on stage but it will flop and gluck through the structures of the space as do embodied experiences flock and gluck through our bodies. In Other Words (2015)
Toisin Sanoen - In Other Words is a meditative performance in a minimalistic universe. It focuses on only one instrument: Wire. The four artists suspend and throw themselves on to steel wires, seek for a delicate balance and strive for control. The qualities and features of the wire become visible, and so does the pain that it causes on the performers’ skin. Together the strong soundscapes, thoroughly contemplated visuals and artists’ movements create a touching body of work, compelling the audience to its grip. The concept for Zero Gravity Company’s fourth stage production was devised by the on stage cast and has been created on an ensemble basis with members writing, sharing emotional responses and engaging in movement improvisation. Each member has directed the creative process and the rehearsals in turn. The creative mentor for the production has also made a significant contribution to the process. Pinta / Surface (2013)
One of us and a rope. Magical images of weightlessness. A rope hangs above an empty stage and stealthily it begins to spin. The motion of the twist grows bigger, until the entire rope wriggles and squirms in the air as if haunted by an invisible force, inviting the performer to the stage. Surface-brushing movement ties the eye to the rope's strong fibres. The rising swirl pulls along, grips intertwine tightly and feet take off from the ground. Reflections ripple on surfaces, spilling on spectator's skin. Awarded Sirkuksen Lumo (Charm of Circus) prize, 2013 by CircusInfo Finland as recognition for work that benefits Finnish circus art. Will Have Sex for Love (2013)
Glitter sticks to sweaty toes and there is a fracture in the dream. In Will Have Sex for Love, a contemporary circus piece which deals with the longing for love, the performers trust each other, hang on to each other, deride and hurt each other. Will Have Sex For Love reaches from the unscrupulous to the comical - riding on a plastic pony with a million dollar smile. In a kaleidoscope build upon two performers we can see love scintillating frail, sticky, shameless and sensitive. Sparks fly fiercely and yet, a silent understanding takes place between the tight wire artist Netta Lepistö and aerial acrobat Maarit Utriainen. They bring to the stage the delicate act balancing on the fine line between sexy and ridiculous, revealing the vulnerability of one longing for love. Directed by Reija Tapaninen, Zero Gravity Company brings you Will Have Sex for Love, a circus piece that jumps from the sugar coated to the sad and is not afraid to ridicule itself. Ydin / Core (2011)
A contemporary circus performance that grabs by the hair, smashes to the floor and embraces. Fingers clasped, hair braided together, carrying the weight of each other four acrobats present their show based on tight companionship. Zero Gravity Companyʼs debut show Ydin (Core) is a fresh and captivating contemporary performance by the new generation of circus. The light and playful performance moves high above the ground. Being grasped by the hair. Focused steps fall on a wire across the air. Toes land on palms. From the reverse side of the beautiful braid of this show we discover scratches and laughter. The gentle human core manifests as ridiculous and touching characters. The characters follow each other persistent as shadows, reaching out to each other and softening the blows. Aerial acrobats Salla Hakanpää, Susanna Keski-Kohtamäki, Maarit Utriainen and tightwire artist Netta Lepistö create a criss-crossing skein of encounters on the stage. The performance digs into the core like a wire to the skin. In the heart of the show we find a human being who disappears, hides and tries to step forth. The concept is woven on the unity of friendship. When braided together even the most fragile tress forms a strong bond on which to rise up in the air.
